Acronym for « Generative Pretrained Transformer », GPTs are curious beasts since they can give the illusion of being alive (in the case of conversational AIs) or even creative (in the case of image generation AIs).
But what you must get is that they are, overall, statistical systems that build sentences (in the case of ChatGPT for example) by putting together words that are most likely to get along.
In other words, a first approximation is to see the so-called « generative » AIs of OpenAI and Anthropic for what they are at heart: very sophisticated word suggestion software (very advanced versions of your smartphone’s autocorrect/writing assistant).
